Privacy Policy
Draft version 0.1, 12 October 2026
Who this covers
This policy covers insure.ug, a website where you can buy motor third party insurance. The cover is issued by MUA Insurance (Uganda) Ltd. The site is operated by Draft: operator legal name and registered address.
Draft: which of the site operator and the insurer is the controller of your data, or whether they are joint controllers
What we collect
- The number plate you type, for the vehicle check, the purchase and the plate lookup on this site.
- Vehicle details returned by the insurer's system for that plate: the registered owner's name, make, model and the premium. They are shown on screen while you check. We store the premium amount with the order.
- Your Mobile Money number, which you enter to pay, and an email address if you choose to give one.
- The order record: plate, phone number, email, cover type, amount, payment reference and status, sticker reference and download link, cover start and end dates, the time, and which site made the sale.
- Activity logs: when you check a plate, start a payment or look up a vehicle, a log entry records what happened (for example "validated" or "payment initiated"), the plate, the page you came from, your browser's user agent and your country as reported by our hosting provider.
- Provider call logs: timings and outcomes of calls our servers make to our providers, with no customer details in them beyond what an error message may contain.
- Your IP address is used for short-lived rate limiting to stop abuse. It is held in memory and is not stored in our database.
On your device
While a payment is in progress, your browser keeps the plate and the payment reference in its local storage for up to 20 minutes, so you can resume if the page closes. It is cleared when the sticker is issued, when the payment fails, or when you dismiss the reminder.
Draft: confirm before launch that no cookies, analytics or advertising trackers are in use, and update this section if that changes
What is visible to other people
When anyone enters a plate in the checkout, the page shows the registered owner's name, make and model for that vehicle, so a buyer can confirm they have the right vehicle. The "Check a vehicle" tool shows only whether the vehicle has active cover.
Draft: decide whether the owner's name should be shortened or hidden in the checkout
Why we use it
- To check the vehicle, issue the cover and show you the sticker.
- To send the Mobile Money payment prompt to the number you entered and confirm the payment.
- To email the sticker when you ask for a copy.
- To find and fix orders that did not finish, and to answer support requests.
- To keep a record of the sale, and to prevent abuse of the service.
Draft: the legal basis for each use, as required by Uganda's data protection law
Who receives it
- MUA Insurance (Uganda) Ltd, which issues the cover, and the policy system that connects this site to it (ServiceCops).
- Mobile Money operators (MTN and Airtel), who process the payment.
- Our service providers: the database host (Supabase), the web host Draft: Vercel, once the site is deployed and the email provider (Resend), which receives your address only if you ask for an emailed copy.
Draft: whether data is shared with anyone else, and whether any of these providers store data outside Uganda
How long we keep it
Draft: retention period for order records and logs
